Russia revokes media license of top independent newspaper

Moscow, Sep 5 (AP) A court in Russia’s capital Moscow has upheld a proposal by Russian authorities to revoke the license of a top independent newspaper. The said newspaper has been criticizing the Kremlin for years.

The incident is the latest in a series of crackdowns over the past month against the independent media, opposition activists and human rights groups.

The ruling against Russia’s well-known independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta comes amid the continuation of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and the Kremlin’s attempt to silence critics.

The editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dmitry Muratov is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He termed Monday’s decision as “political” and claimed it had “no legal basis”. He promised to fight a legal battle against it.

Russia’s media and internet regulator Roskomnadzor filed a petition in court to revoke Novaya Gazeta’s license. The petition alleged that he had failed to present the newsroom charter to the authorities in time.

Novaya Gazeta announced on 28 March that it was suspending its operations in Ukraine for the duration of a “special operation”. Russian officials say the media should use the term “special operations” to refer to military action in Ukraine.

However, its team criticized the operation in Ukraine and launched a new project from abroad, Novaya Gazeta Europe.

Days after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine on February 24, Russia’s Kremlin-controlled parliament approved legislation that would “falsely” denounce the Russian military or the country’s military operation in Ukraine. Restricts the dissemination of information.

As a result dozens of Russian independent media units were banned, while others announced a halt to Ukraine-related reporting.
