Kyiv:US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Thursday made an unannounced visit to Kyiv and to other European countries facing challenges from Ukraine and Russia. Announced new military aid of two billion dollars.
Blinken said in a meeting with senior Ukrainian officials that the Biden administration would provide $2 billion of long-term foreign military funding to Ukraine and its 18 neighbors that are “at the highest potential risk of future Russian aggression”. Huh. These neighboring countries of Ukraine also include NATO member states and regional security partners.
This is in addition to the $675 million additional military aid package announced for Ukraine only on Thursday by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a conference in Germany. That package includes howitzers, artillery armament, military vehicles, armored ambulances, anti-tank systems and other weapons and equipment.
Austin said “the war is in another critical phase” and Ukrainian forces have launched counter-attacks in the country’s south. He said that “we are now seeing the clear success of our shared efforts on the battlefield.”
The meeting of the Ukraine Defense Liaison Group was attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the Defense Minister of Ukraine as well as officials from allied countries.
