African Union: The Tigray Front’s readiness to negotiate is a unique opportunity

Forces in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region have said they are ready for a ceasefire and acceptance of an African Union-led peace process.

“We are ready to commit to an immediate cessation of hostilities agreed upon by both sides,” it said in a statement.
The statement said Tigray has set up a negotiating team ready to act “without delay”.

The Ethiopian federal government said in June that the African Union should facilitate peace talks.

Ethiopian government spokesman Legisi Tolu did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the government had previously said it was ready to enter into talks without preconditions.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the international organization is ready to support the peace process led by the African Union.

He added that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “calls on both sides to seize this opportunity for peace and to take steps to end violence once and for all and opt for dialogue.”

“The next step is to complete the ceasefire negotiations and conduct an inclusive political dialogue to resolve the issues underlying the current conflict,” the statement by the Tigray Forces said.

The conflict in northern Ethiopia has displaced millions and killed thousands. Fighting resumed there last month after a ceasefire for several months.
