Death toll from earthquake in western China rises to 93

Date:

BEIJING, Sep 12 (AP) The death toll from an earthquake in western China has risen to 93, as the search for survivors continues. Officials gave this information.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan province last week, causing extensive damage in the province’s Ganje Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Rescue teams said 25 more people were reported missing as of Sunday evening, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The search for survivors and the recovery of bodies was complicated due to heavy rains and the risk of landslides. Some residents had to take shelter in temporary shelters due to heavy rains and landslides.

The quake also affected the province’s capital, Chengdu, where residents are under a strict zero-Covid policy. This means that they are not allowed to leave their buildings. Video footage online showed residents banging metal gates in front of apartment complexes and demanding they leave their buildings.

Chengdu’s local government announced that some districts with no new cases of COVID-19 would be allowed to reopen on Monday. However, most of its 2.1 crore residents are under lockdown. Only 143 cases of corona virus infection were reported in the city on Monday, of which more than half were people who did not have symptoms of infection.

China has stuck to its strategy of lockdown and mass testing, while other countries of the world have eased restrictions. This policy of China has reduced the number of deaths but it has forced millions of people to remain locked in their homes for weeks or months at a time.
