Swedish Prime Minister Andersen resigns

Date:

Copenhagen, Sep 15 (AP) Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Thursday resigned from her post after a right-wing group won a simple majority in the country’s parliament.

Andersen met with Andreas Norlen, the chairman of Sweden’s 349-seat Riksdag, and formally informed him of his resignation. Anderson will remain caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

Norlein is expected to ask Ulf Christerson, the leader of the mid-right, the Moderate Party, to try to form a governing coalition. After Sunday’s general elections, the right-wing bloc holds 176 seats, while the middle-left bloc, which holds the Social Democrats, has 173 seats.

On Wednesday, after 99.9 percent of the votes were counted, Anderson conceded defeat.
