Bhaichung Bhutia AIFF: Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia, Football Delhi president Shaji Prabhakaran and Kalyan Choubey have filed their nominations for the post of president in the upcoming All India Football Federation (AIFF) elections to be held here on August 28. Bhutia’s name was proposed by his friend and teammate Deepak Mandal and endorsed by Madhu Kumari, who is part of the Electoral College as a player.
Former player Kalyan Choubey has also filed nomination for the top post and is considered to be the frontrunner in the race for the president. Former players who filed nominations are Eugeneson Lyngdoh (Meghalaya Football Association) and Ajit Banerjee, brother of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The deadline for filing nominations ends on August 19, 2022. The AIFF Executive Committee election is to be held here on August 28.
Choubey has entered the fray as a normal candidate and this could strengthen his chances for the top post, as FIFA is not in favor of having the country’s apex body run by eminent players. FIFA on Tuesday suspended India for undue interference from third parties and said that the U-17 Women’s World Cup cannot be held in India as planned at present.
The suspension will be lifted once the order setting up a Committee of Administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee is revoked and the AIFF administration has gained full control over the day-to-day affairs of the AIFF. On 3 August, the Supreme Court had passed directions to conduct elections to the AIFF Executive Committee before India’s hosting of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
