Wellington. Chris Hipkins has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of New Zealand after the unexpected resignation of Jacinda Ardern. Hipkins, 44, was sworn in as New Zealand’s 41st prime minister on Wednesday. After accepting Ardern’s resignation, New Zealand Governor-General Cindy Kiro presided over a brief swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday.

According to news agency ANI, Hipkins and future Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni arrived at around 11.20 local time for the swearing-in ceremony. Hipkins indicated tackling inflation and the pandemic would be a top priority for his cabinet. Hipkins was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and was appointed Minister for COVID-19 in November 2020. He was also the Minister of Police, Education and Public Service.

Significantly, the surprise resignation of Jacinda Ardern had raised the crisis of re-electing the Prime Minister in front of the Labor Party. A poll by local media organization Stuff showed that Chris Hipkins was the most popular candidate for PM among voters with 26 per cent support. After becoming Prime Minister, Hipkins will hold the post for less than 8 months. After this there will be general elections.
