German city stops lighting its landmarks to save energy

Date:

With the skyrocketing electricity prices, and warnings of a lack of energy in the winter, the German city of Lübeck announced that it will stop outdoor lighting in public buildings from next Monday.
On Friday, city authorities said the decision would include major landmarks, including two medieval gates with twin towers and downtown churches.
“It is necessary at the moment to do everything possible – even as a municipality – to save energy,” Mayor Jan Lindenau said.
It should be noted that the municipal buildings were lit up until 1 am. The Russian war in Ukraine and a significant reduction in gas supplies from Russia drove up energy prices in Germany and throughout Europe.
