Forty-six-year-old singer and songwriter Gulsen Kolakoglu was taken from her Istanbul home for questioning and formally arrested late Thursday. After that he was taken to jail.
Gulsen’s arrest created a ruckus on social media. Critics of the government have said the move is an attempt by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to strengthen his position with his religious fanaticism and orthodoxy ahead of elections due in the next 10 months.
A video of the singer’s remarks recently went viral on social media, with the hashtag calling for her to be arrested.
Gulsen also apologized for his mistake, as well as said that his comments were taken by people who wanted to polarize the country.
Government agency Anadolu Agency said Gulsen dismissed the allegations of inciting hatred and enmity. However, the court rejected his request to release him from custody till the outcome of the trial.
The leader of Turkey’s main opposition party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, has called on Turkish judges and prosecutors to release Gulsen. He tweeted, “Don’t betray the law and justice; Release the artist now!
